Shiatsu Zurich

Shiatsu is a type of body therapy that originated in Japan and has its origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this holistic pressure point massage body, mind and soul are brought into harmony.

Shiatsu works with energy pathways, the so-called meridians. The aim is to bring the energy back into its original flow, whereby physical and psychological blockages can be released and physical ailments can be treated.

How does Shiatsu work?

Shiatsu literally means «finger pressure», as the therapist works with their fingers, but also with their elbows or knees, along the energy pathways.

However, Shiatsu is much more than a pressure point massage. Various stretching exercises and mobilization techniques, as well as breathing exercises, are applied. The therapist’s touch and the mindful and energetic connection between client and therapist, enables the energies to flow again in their natural rhythm.

Through their connection, the therapist senses where energy blockages have formed and can thereby target and dissolve them.

The effects of Shiatsu

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the life energy Qi plays a central role in optimal human health. Through the meridians the Qi flows through our entire body and affects organs and processes. If there is an imbalance of Qi in one area of the body, for example because the energy is being blocked,  this can be the trigger for physical and psychological complaints.

Shiatsu promotes the client’s self-perception. It increases their self-compassion and allows them to become more conscious of tensions and blockages.

According to TCM, the body’s energy pathways are connected to certain points on the surface of the skin (=acupuncture points). Thus, the Shiatsu therapist treats these points along the meridians to balance the flow of energy and stimulate the body’s self-healing powers. Through this, the well-being of the client can be restored. It calms their nervous system and the

blood circulation of connective tissue, skin and muscles is stimulated.

When can Shiatsu help?

Since Shiatsu is a type of holistic body therapy, it can help with many ailments or prevent them.

Traditionally, Shiatsu is used to cure, or help with:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Digestive problems
  • Colds and respiratory diseases
  • Stress, sleep disturbances or fatigue
  • Tensions
  • Menstrual problems and menstrual cramps
  • Support during life crises and reorientation
  • To release psychological blockages
  • To calm the nervous system

among others.

Procedure

Shiatsu treatments at Origin Massage Zurich usually start with a conversation for the therapist to gain a picture of the client’s ailments and desired treatment goals.

After that, the client lies down dressed on either a massage bed or a mat on the floor. In Western countries Shiatsu is usually performed in comfortable clothing and it is often done on the floor on a mat.

The therapist starts with an energetic body scan. They put their hands on the various energy centers and open them. Often this is accompanied by mindfulness or breathing exercises.

During the body scan, the therapist notices energetic blockages or imbalances in the body. They start massaging the respective parts of the body. Rhythmic circular movements cause the body to vibrate and stimulate the energy cycle.

After that, the Shiatsu therapist works along the meridians and brings the energy back into its original flow. This is followed by elements of acupressure and targeted mobilizations.

Finally, the therapist puts their hands on the treated energy centers and the client is allowed to relax on the mat for a few minutes.
